A New Season of Campus Ministry in Athens

Three years ago Presbyterian Campus Ministry welcomed the United Church of Christ as a full partner in service to our mission on UGA’s campus. In formulating that partnership, it was agreed that any truly ecumenical ministry could not maintain a distinctly denominational legal or common name, and that within three years the ministry would undergo a rebranding process to more accurately and fairly represent all partners invested in this ministry.

Admittedly, that timeline did not anticipate a global pandemic, and assumed the completion of our still ongoing NEXT80 Capital Campaign. But all other factors notwithstanding, the time to actualize this organization’s evolving identity has come.

And so it is with excitement, joy, and conviction of the expansive, inclusive movement of the Spirit of God that we present

The Table: A Cooperative Christian Campus Ministry at UGA

The name “The Table” was chosen for its multivalent consistency and emphasis within the current ministry’s theology and programming. Our main weekly gathering has been and will continue to be called WORD+TABLE, which refers to the two elements of that program—a communal meal (TABLE), and a worship service centered around the proclamation of the WORD of God, and the celebration of the sacrament of communion. In the sacrament, the TABLE is a central image as the domain of Christ, in which all are welcomed and afforded dignity and true, unqualified belonging—a share in the gift of body and blood; bread and wine.

It is also the case that in recent years, food, hunger, and feeding have taken on the bulk of our ministry’s commitment to faithful community service, so that in addition to a free weekly meal for students, the PSC also hosts a food pantry, and cultivates a small garden, the produce of which supplements both the weekly meal and the pantry.  For all of these reasons, and no doubt more that will become clear as we live more fully into our new identity, The Table marks an exciting new stage and season in the long life of this faithful Christian ministry.

The Table is an inclusive Christian campus ministry in Athens, GA that affirms the full participation and dignity of all people in all aspects of Christian life and ministry regardless of race, ability, gender identity, or sexual orientation. Open to students of any religious background, the Table is sponsored by the Presbyterian Church (USA), United Church of Christ, Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), and local congregations of the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship.
