Learning and Gathering opportunities for the Week of March 30

I sincerely hope that you are staying healthy and doing well through these uncertain times!

As Conference staff, we have been seeking to be helpful and supportive in different ways, including sharing of information and opportunities for mutual support and learning.

I want to highlight four opportunities in the next week:

Specifically for Clergy

Specialized Minister Zoom Conversation

For all clergy: What are your ideas/plans for Holy Week and Easter?

For all Clergy, Church Leaders, and Treasurers

Families First Act: Response to COVID-19 Webcast

On behalf of the UCC Insurance Board, Heather E. Kimmel, General Counsel for the UCC, will offer a webcast on the new “Families First Coronavirus Response Act.” The Act covers employers with fewer than 500 employees and may cover some churches that are not ordinarily covered under federal employment laws. This law goes into effect on April 1, 2020, and churches need to be prepared.

  • Tuesday, March 31, 2 pm Eastern Time
  • This webinar is open to all who are interested in attending. Register here.

The New World of Church Stewardship: from Offering Plates to Online Giving

Join the UCC Cornerstone Fund for a FREE interactive webinar for a discussion about the (quickly) changing face of church stewardship and overall giving, including best practices, lessons learned, and experimental efforts going on during the COVID-19 pandemic and suspension of in-person services. This FREE, one-hour webinar includes a 45-minute panel presentation with a 15-minute question and answer session. Pastors, church staff, and lay leadership are invited to attend.

  • Tuesday, March 31, 2020; 12 p.m. Eastern Time
  • This webinar is open to all who are interested in attending. Register here.

Support to Address the Possible Impact of the Pandemic on Church Finances

In times of uncertainty, it is natural to worry about church finances!  Pastors, church treasurers, and other lay leaders are invited to participate in a Conference Zoom virtual meeting to discuss stewardship and financial concerns in these times of challenge. We will be joined by Andrew Warner, UCC Generosity Outreach Officer, and Patrick Duggan and Susan Mitchell of the UCC Building & Loan Fund.

  • April 6, at 7 pm Eastern Time
  • This webinar is open to all who are interested in attending. Register here.

Disaster Ministries

I also want to make sure that you are aware that the UCC Disaster Ministries has a point person who adds daily updates about COVID-19 and other areas of concern. Go to www.ucc.org/coronavirus (actually you can click on the picture on the home page). Scroll down halfway and your will see COVID-19 Daily Briefings from Disaster Ministries. In addition, the site has multiple resources that can be helpful for worship, pastoral care, etc.

Meanwhile, you continue in my prayers! Feel free to contact Associate Conference Minister Heather Fosburgh or me if there are ways that we can be helpful. Stay healthy – physically, mentally, and spiritually!

Blessings, Char Burch
