On Monday, January 27 Atlanta city leaders unveiled a mural honoring Rev. Joseph E. Boone. Known as the “picketing preacher,” Rev. Boone was the pastor of Rush Memorial Congregational United Church of Christ for over 20 years. He was an important member of the Atlanta Student Movement, which led to the integration of lunch counters and department stores in Atlanta. In the 1960s, Rev. Boone was appointed by Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as chief negotiator for Operation Breadbasket, a program of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference that urged local businesses to hire, promote and fairly treat black employees.
