The following is from Nancy and Ted Elsenheimer
Mission Trip to Puerto Rico, June 15-22, 2019. The group can be 6 to 15 people. Teens ages 16-17 are also welcome.
In cooperation with the UCC Disaster Ministries and the Puerto Rico Conference, there are about 50 houses which need roof repair (flat roofs, one story). More homes will be added to the list a the word spreads. Tools and materials are provided. Much of our work is on roofs – they are not very high and are flat and made of cement. We also have metal roofs, that require ladder work; inside painting; door and window installation, repairing outside stairs, some electrical and plumbing etc.
Depending on the size of the group, we will stay at a camp in Luquillo with 3 dorm rooms, each sleeping 16 and each with bathrooms with 2 showers and 3 toilets etc. For groups of 12 or smaller, we have a house (with linens) in Humacao. We could have a person is solely in charge of meals!
You fly into San Juan. (We traveled on our driver’s licenses). We ask you to try to arrive by 4:00. The drive from the airport to the camp, where large groups stay, is about 45 minutes. The drive to Humacao is about an hour and a quarter. Also, if you do not go out for meals, you will be cooking your own meals, so you might want to factor in some time to stop at the local grocery store.
Your costs include airfare, your groceries, your car rental and entertainment. Donations for lodging are appreciated, but not obligatory (suggested amount $15/night/per person).
You can donate to Garden of Grace UCC and the money will be designated for Puerto Rico.
We will be taking donations of school supplies and books and/cash donations toward those.
Please let Ted or Nancy know if you are interested!
Bienvenidos y Paz
