During the Ala-Tenn (Western) Association meeting in Montgomery, Alabama on Saturday, October 27, a special Ecclesiastical Council was held to consider the request by Spirit of the Cross church in Huntsville, Alabama to become a member congregation of the United Church of Christ.
Those gathered in person and online voted unanimously to affirm the request, and it is with great joy we welcome Spirit of the Cross to the Southeast Conference.
Spirit of the Cross is “a church for everyone with a primary outreach to the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender community and straight allies (friends and family). They are a Christ-centered congregation. They believe that Jesus taught us to live and walk in love for God, all other people, and ourselves. They are a place where one can worship without fear or shame, make friends, and learn about the affirming love of Christ.”
Rev. J. Richard Barham has been the senior pastor since November 1999, when the congregation was known as the Metropolitan Community Church of Huntsville. The church has experienced growth in membership and in every area of ministry and worship. In August 2007, Spirit of the Cross completed the new worship center that was built to help accommodate the growth. In March 2009, the church completed the addition of new classrooms in the Celia Reynolds Fellowship Hall. Spirit of the Cross continues to be excited about its role in the Tennessee Valley and its ministry to all including its primary ministry of serving north Alabama’s gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender community.
