The UCC lost two faithful servants on November 20, 2017, both members of Pleasant Hill Community Church in Pleasant Hill, Tennessee.
Rev. Robert Ahrendt
Rev. Robert (Bob) Charles Ahrendt of Pleasant Hill TN, who passed away November 20, was born March 23, 1934, in Chicago Heights, IL, to Paul Martin and Anita Lydia Mernitz Ahrendt. He graduated from Elmhurst College (1955) and Eden Theological Seminary (1959). Two of his great-grandfathers, Joachim Mernitz (1865) and Julius Klopsteg (1873), one grandfather, Richard Mernitz (1902), and one uncle, Roland Mernitz (1926) were also Eden graduates.
Bob served UCC churches in Pearl City, Illinois; Bennett, Iowa; Covington, Ohio; Plymouth, Indiana; Canton, Arlington Heights, Kankakee, and Plainfield, Illinois.
After retiring in 1998, he moved to Uplands Village in 1999. At Uplands, he began his second career doing volunteer work for many different organizations, including one week each year with Northern Illinois University students working on Habitat for Humanity, the month of December with Cumberland Good Samaritan Christmas for Kids, one month each summer at Shannondale UCC Community Center, camp, and sustainable tree farm in the Missouri Ozarks. He also spent hours doing repairs for many Upland residents, Pleasant Hill Community Church, and The Grab Thrift Store.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Elaine (Schult), and children: Pam, Gary (Liza), and Joel; five grandchildren: Latosha (Akram) Harb, George (Jamilah Gore) Polk, Paul (Amanda Troop), Steven (Kat Pham), and Neil Ahrendt; six great-grandchildren: Aaliyah, Bibianna, Princeton, Malik, and Calianna Harb, and Kalani Polk.
Memorials can be made to Pleasant Hill Community Church (PO Box 67, Pleasant Hill TN 38578) to establish a building maintenance fund.
Rev. William V. Ring
Rev. William (Bill) Verner Ring passed into eternity in the early morning hours of November 20, 2017. He was 85 years old. Bill, a native of Chicago, IL, was born February 28, 1932, to Eleanor (Isaachsen)and Gust Ring. He attended the University of Illinois where he played basketball, Youngstown State University, Trinity Seminary, and Kent State University.
Bill had a long career of 45 years as a minister in the church starting as a youth in Norwood Heights Evangelical Congregational Church, Chicago, which he left in 1953 to pastor an E.C. Church in Southington, OH, and subsequently Canton, OH. He held pastorates in Leetonia, OH, Alliance, OH and Ft. Lauderdale, FL (20 years). He was very active in community endeavors including a long membership in Rotary International and the Community Foundation in Tampa, FL. He also served as adjunct faculty at Mount Union College Alliance OH, teaching Sociology of Religion, and Bible Intro. He retired in 1997 with interim positions taking him to Valrico, FL, Sun City Center, FL and finally to Pleasant Hill TN.
He was a beloved and gifted counselor and preacher with a passion for reading. He loved traveling, music, and his HO model trains. Bill was a loving husband and proud father, grandfather, and great grandfather.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his first wife of 53 years, Marguerite (Nicodem). He is survived by his wife, Jean (Gantzer); brother Donald (Sonja); children Lynn (Dan) Beezley, Jeff Ring, and Paul (Lisa) Ring; three grandchildren Joshua (Amber) Beezley, Justin Beezley, and James Ring; two great grandsons, Harper and Larson Beezley.
