Mary and Bill Ruth, from SEC Pleasant Hill Community UCC, are commissioned UCC Partners in Service Volunteers at Uspiritus in Louisville KY for 3 months (Jan-Mar 2017). They are full time residential volunteers supporting the administrative/development arm of Uspiritus which gives them the opportunity to donate their career skills while in retirement. Uspiritus is a 12-12-12 merger of UCC and Presbyterian homes for children in Louisville. The letter below tells more. And the annual report at the end is ‘worth a click’!
Greetings from Uspiritus – For more than 160 years, Brooklawn Child and Family Services and Bellewood Home for Children worked separately to nurture thousands of Kentucky’s most vulnerable children. In partnering to form Uspiritus, we combined strengths to provide the highest quality of care for the children and families we serve.
The successes of this past year* are evidence that these combined strengths are making a difference. We successfully served youth to our capacity in our residential programs. Therapeutic Foster Care continues to grow. Our Community Based Services and Family Preservation Program works diligently to keep children in their homes and families together. Key leadership positions have been filled and new programs are being designed that will provide skill-building opportunities for both life and vocation for the youth in our community.
The name Uspiritus has become synonymous with quality and professionalism as one of the largest residential agencies for children in Kentucky. As our name recognition continues to grow, we will never lose sight of our rich history and deep traditions that began with our founding church partners.
Our faith partners continue to live out their mission of service. Churches volunteer with us, send holiday cards and birthday support to the children, and most importantly, keep our children in their daily prayers. We rely on this continued support from caring individuals and churches to help us do this important work.
There are many opportunities to get involved in the lives of our children and to support our mission: include the Uspiritus children, families, and staff in your prayers; invite a Uspiritus representative to share our mission with you; come to one of our residential campuses for a tour and meet the children; organize a group to volunteer with our kids or to help with a special project; send holiday or birthday cards to the children; collect needed items from our “wish list” or collect a special offering.
If you would like to learn more about how you or your church can get involved, please contact Missy Fountain, Director of Community Engagement at 502-753-5508 or [email protected]. Uspiritus values your partnership and we look forward to seeing you this year!
