“Ministry Happens” on MLK Weekend in the Southeast Conference!

The second weekend of January in 2017 saw ministry happening all across the South, as folks from around the UCC gathered to play, to serve and to grow. Here are highlights from the weekend:

Winter Youth Retreat

Forty-seven people from Southeast Conference attended the Winter Youth Retreat hosted by the Southern and Southeast Conferences at Blowing Rock Conference Center in Blowing Rock, North Carolina. Our Conference had groups from First Congregational, Atlanta; Central UCC, Atlanta; Church of the Savior, Knoxville; and Circular Church, Charleston along with Rev. Lacey Brown who represented the Southeast Conference on the Planning Committee. They are among the 165 youth and leaders from 17 congregations in Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia.

Members in Discernment and Persons in Exploration Retreat

Pleasant Hill Community Church, located in the rolling hills of Eastern Tennessee, hosted 24 of our people who are on the path to ordained ministry. The highlight of the weekend was a two-day workshop hosted by Rev. Marcia McFee, a renowned consultant sought the world over for her innovative and intentional designs for meaningful worship. Participants were housed by members of PHCC, many of which are retired clergy themselves. The weekend, sponsored by the Commission on Ministry, was a terrific success!

One Day, Two Ordinations!

The Conference, acting as an Association, had the honor and privilege to ordain our two newest members of the clergy: Jodi Yarini and Josh Kuipers. Jodi is the pastor of Decatur UCC in Georgia, with her ordination service being held the afternoon of January 15 at Virginia Highland Church in Atlanta. Josh, a member of Kirkwood UCC, was ordained during that congregation’s regular 5:00 worship service on Sunday, January 15. Josh has been called as Associate Pastor by Congregational UCC, St. Charles, Illinois.
