Pleasant Hill Community Church ‘commissioned’ UCC Partners in Service volunteers, Mary and Bill Ruth, as they prepare to serve three months in Louisville, Kentucky at USPIRITUS where they will help with restoring hope, instilling confidence, furthering education, encouraging spirituality and faith through a comprehensive continuum of care for vulnerable youth and families.
Liturgist Rebecca Seldomridge read the scripture John 13:34 and Pastor Glenna Shepherd spoke of this new adventure for God and possible ‘life changing’ experiences. Mary and Bill responded to statements about new ways to experience God, using their wisdom and experience as well as sharing skills and talents with ‘we will, with the help of God and one another.’ The congregation then promised to partner with the Ruths and their mission of service and together live in covenant.
Glenna, on behalf of the congregation and the wider United Church of Christ, offered blessings to Mary and Bill to serve as disciples of Christ, to be Partners in Service and to “love one another as Christ has first loved you.”
Mary and Bill Ruth first served with UCC Partners in Service in 2003 when they were members of Elon Community Church UCC in Elon NC and discovered such service to be a ‘calling’ in their retirement years. They have had 14 assignments at 10 different locations. The Ruths recommend this UCC ministry (a program ongoing for nearly 60 years) to both ‘young and old’ and are willing to speak at churches or visit with persons who might be interested in learning more.
