Jottings from June: June 1, 2016

juneboutwell-redbackgroundThis is an abbreviated edition of the newsletter so we can prepare to welcome you to the 50th Annual Meeting of the Southeast Conference.

Our Theme is “Celebrating Jubilee” and our meeting text is from Nehemiah 8:1, 9-10, 12. Our opening worship will be in the chapel at Piedmont College and we will close with a communion service on Saturday afternoon. We will honor the saints who have died in the past year during the historical program on Saturday morning so please be prepared to have one person from your congregation read the names during the program.

You will see the link to the all the materials for Annual Meeting at the top of the Conference website. Just a reminder that all delegates and visitors need to download and/or print their own copies as we have moved to a paperless meeting.

We are asking each church to bring a gift bag from your church to share on Friday night at the banquet. This can be items you give to visitors or have to honor your members such as apron, magnet, coffee cup, choir CD, etc. Please include a card from your church to the recipient. We will have a drop-off for gift bags in the registration area.

We are very excited about the program which will include greetings from our sister Conferences in the Southern Region and from the national setting of the UCC. We will also welcome special guests as leaders for worship and the authorized ministers’ retreat. Other special guests will share during our historical retrospective on Saturday morning.

We will also be honoring Gerri Ryons-Hudson for her service to the Conference. And there will be the usual recognitions for Our Church’s Wider Mission, 5 for 5 congregations, significant clergy anniversaries, and other awards.

PATHWAYS will be hosting a used book sale. You are invited to bring your contributions to donate. We will also be having a silent auction of some art prints from the Conference office. There will also be books for purchase and author signings by Joyce Hollyday, Lou Kavar, and Glenna Shepherd.

One of the most exciting things about our 50th Annual Meeting will be the publication of a Southeast Conference History written by Michael Stroud. Copies of the book will be available for sale at the Annual Meeting. I have learned a lot about the Southeast Conference from the careful research that Mike has done and wish that I had known some of the stories when I began my ministry among you.

Stay tuned to Facebook for updates during Annual Meeting and watch for the Annual Meeting Review in the mid-June newsletter.
