This past weekend the Southern and Southeastern Conferences of the United Church of Christ held their annual Winter Youth Retreat at the Blowing Rock Conference Center. 180 youth and leaders came together to fellowship, worship, and play in the snow. The featured speaker was Rev. Waltrina Middleton, the National UCC Minister for Youth Advocacy and Leadership Formation.
At each gathering participants looked at stories from the Gospel of Luke which asked the question, “Who is my neighbor?” They also enjoyed music from the talented duo Alathea. On Sunday, many of the churches headed for the slopes at Sugar Mountain or Jonas Ridge. Others chose to venture out into the community for service projects in honor of MLK, such as serving a meal at Hospitality House, or chopping wood for the home bound with High Country UCC.
It was incredible to see so many young people invested in asking hard questions about faith and what it means to live as good neighbors in community. We are excited to welcome them back next January 2017!
