YOU ARE HERE: Home Leadership
Leadership

Pastoral and Lay leadership development is the future of our Church. We must be intentional about developing the leaders that we will need both now and in the future. In the Southeast Conference we are looking for passionate leaders. We believe there is a difference between being driven and being passionate when it comes to leadership. Leaders who are driven are trying to seek approval for something. They focus on the goal alone.

Leaders who are passionate in leadership
savor the journey as much as the destination.

Those that are driven usually depend on the attention of others; those passionate work from a spiritual center within. Driven people burn out. Passionate people do not.

Here are Some Opportunties for Leadership Development:

Leadership Development Seminars / Webinars
UCC History and Polity

We believe strongly that the future of our Church depends upon the passionate leadership skill of men and women convinced and convicted by the Good News of Jesus Christ. The United Church of Christ has a unique message in our world - a message of inclusivity and welcome for ALL God's people - and we are training the leaders to proclaim that message to the world.

Assessment Tools PDF Print E-mail

Leadership assessment is a critical part of developing church leaders for our current world. Finding leaders with strong integrity, vision and communication skills is our goal in the UCC. To that end, we have developed or discovered a number of assessment tools which help us all evaluate and train our emerging leaders. Some of these tools include:

In an interview with Bob Buford of Leadership Network, Drucker made the following observations on leadership:

1. The Mission Comes First. And the mission of all non-profits, including churches, is changed lives!

2. The Function of Management (in a church) is to make the church more church-like, not to make the church more business-like.

3. Management is a Social Function and has mostly to do with people, not things and procedures.

4. An Organization Begins to Die the day it begins to be run for the benefit of the insiders and not for the benefit of the outsiders.

5. Know the Value of Planned Abandonment.Decide what not to do. Drucker says, "Nothing is less productive than to make more efficient what should not be done at all."

  • Empowered and impassioned, Pacific NW group is ready for National Youth Event
The Rev. Tara Barber makes a pretty strong case for bringing youth and young adults to the United Church of Christ's National Youth Event. "I know that NYE changes lives," said Barber, one of seven adult chaperones who will accompany 43 youth and young adults from the UCC's Pacific Northwest Conference to NYE 2012 at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind., July 10-13.
