Frequently Asked Questions

How do I become a participant in a Comma Connection?

Call the Conference Office or check online at www.secucc.org. As we further develop the program, we hope to have an extensive network of groups available as options. However, in the initial phase of development, group choices may be limited.

What is a typical Comma Connection gathering like?

This is nearly impossible to answer. Because of the flexibility of the system, each group can structure their meetings in any way they choose, so long as they honor the three foci of worship, discipleship and service in their times together. Some groups may meet at coffee house on a weeknight to talk about issues of faith in the workplace. Others may gather in private homes and talk about raising children with a progressive theology in a conservative political culture. Still others may gather to build or repair homes around the community and close their time together with singing or devotion. The possibilities are endless.

Here is what you can expect to find – a group of people who are delighted that you want to join their group and will welcome you unconditionally.

How many leaders do we need to start a group?

That is up to the needs of your group. If you want it to be more casual, rotating leadership throughout the members might be an option. If you want more directed leadership, an in-care student might be a good option.

What costs can we expect to incur?

Again, that depends upon the structure of the group. You might want to collect money to cover some food expenses or to pay for any curriculum your group might decide to use. You might also need funding for any community service projects that your group undertakes. We do ask that of whatever the group collects, 10% is given to the Conference Office as a sign of commitment to the larger United Church of Christ.
