TAP Frequently Asked Questions
What does it take to start a TAP group in my congregation?
Begin by discussing the possibility with your pastor and church leaders. Then, talk it up among your friends and fellow parishioners. Contact other UCC churches in your area to see if others are interested in finding out more about TAP. Then contact the program director, Rev. Kathy Clark, to set up an TAP information meeting. All it takes to start a TAP group is five people who are committed to the process.

Are there any exams in TAP?
There are no exams in the TAP courses. Instead, participants choose from among a list of suggested projects to apply and demonstrate their learning. Participants are encouraged to be creative and to choose a project that is meaningful to them and/or could be used in the course of their ministries.
Who leads the TAP classes?
TAP is built upon the principles of adult education which recognize that everyone in the group brings expertise to the teaching/learning process. Facilitators who are trained in TAP methodologies and group process guide the learning experiences in each group.
How often do the TAP groups meet?
Each group decides on the day, time, and frequency of their meetings based on the needs of the members and the practices of their community. Each course lasts 16 contact hours. Some groups choose to meet weekly, others bi-weekly, and still others on a different schedule. This is to be negotiated among the members of each group at their initial gathering.
What materials does TAP use?
There are a variety of text books and web-based resources that are made available for each course. All required texts and materials are included in the price of tuition. Additionally, there is an extensive bibliography available for each course. Attention is paid to gender and ethnic diversity in choosing texts and materials.
How much does each course cost?
TAP strives to be affordable and accessible to all who feel called to participate. The cost per course is $100.00 and includes all textbooks and course materials. Congregations are encouraged to support participants spiritually and financially. A limited number of scholarships are available to those with demonstrated need. Who may participate in TAP?
TAP is open to all members of the Southeast Conference of the United Church of Christ and our ecumenical partner churches. No educational prerequisites are required.
Is TAP a pathway toward authorization in the UCC?
TAP is a training program for lay ministers. It does not authorize individuals to become commissioned, licensed or ordained. Participants seeking authorization for ministry should contact their association Church and Ministry Committee or appropriate authorizing body for requirements and guidelines.
